Central–Mid-Levels Escalator

The world’s longest outdoor covered escalator, offering a glimpse into old Hong Kong.

The Central–Mid-Levels Escalator and Walkway System in Hong Kong is the world's longest outdoor covered escalator system. Opened in 1993, it stretches approximately 800 meters with a vertical rise of over 135 meters, connecting Central and the Mid-Levels area. It provides a convenient way for residents and visitors to navigate the hilly terrain.

The system is made up of a series of one-way escalators and walkways. From 6:00 AM to 10:00 AM, the escalators run downward to accommodate morning commuters heading to Central for work. From 10:00 AM to midnight, they operate upward, making it easier for people to return to the Mid-Levels or explore the vibrant areas along the route.

The escalator system passes through popular spots, including the trendy SoHo district with its restaurants and bars, Hollywood Road with antique shops and galleries, and even the Dr. Sun Yat-sen Museum. It’s both a practical transit system and a tourist attraction, offering unique views of Hong Kong's urban landscape.
